   poet
   Born at Versailles, Jean-François Ducis was a translator into French of William Shakespeare's works, which he tried to adapt to the theater with the rules of classical tragedy (Hamlet, 1769; Romeo and Juliette, 1772; King Lear, 1783; Macbeth, 1784; Othello, 1792). In his academic adaptations, he is the first to introduce the works of the great English dramatist to the French public. Ducis was elected to the Académie Française in 1778.
